Classification Flashcards
What is the first level of supernova classification?
Does it show hydrogen?
What is the first sub-classification of Type 1a supernovae?
Based on the presence or absence of silicon or helium.
What type(s) of supernovae is found in elliptical galaxies (old stellar populations)?
Only Type 1a (Thermonuclear) as they come from old low mass stars.
What type(s) of supernovae is found in blue star-forming galaxies (young and old stellar populations)?
All types of supernovae.
What is a homogeneous supernovae?
Type 1a - they come from old, low mass stars with the same progenitor, a hydrogen-less WD with mass 1.4M.
What is a heterogeneous supernovae?
Core collapse SN - they arise from young, massive stars covering a large range of masses.
