Classification Flashcards
Classification
The division between organisms into groups, or classes, based on specific characteristics
Class
A taxonomic rate
Kingdom
A taxonomic category of the highest rank, grouping together all forms of life having certain fundamental characteristics in common
Chordata
any of a phylum of animals having at least at some stage of development a notochord, dorsally situated central nervous system, and gill clefts and including the vertebrates, lancelets, and tunicates.
Dichotomous Key
an aid that is used to identify organisms and that consists of the answers to a series of questions
Archaebacteria
A kingdom made up of bacteria that live in extreme environments
Family
One of the eight major taxonomic ranks
Genus
A taxonomic category ranking used in biological classification
Animalia
A kingdom made up of complex, multi cellular organisms that lack cell walls , can usually move around, and quickly respond to their environment
Chordata
Any of a phylum of animals having at least at some stage of development a notochord, dorsally situated central nervous system, and gill clefts and including the vertebrates, lancelets, and tunicates.
Hominid
A type of primate characterized by bipedalism
Dichotomous Key
An aid that is used to identify organisms and that consists of the answers to a series of questions
Domain
The highest taxonomic rank of organisms in the three-domain system of taxonomy
Bacteria
Microscopic living organisms, usually one-celled, that can be found everywhere
Taxonomy
The science of classifying, describing, and naming organisms
