Classification Flashcards
Classification
The binomial system names an organism using its genus and species. Keys can be used to identify different species.
Taxonomy
the branch of science concerned with classification, especially of organisms; systematics.
Binomial nomenclature
is a formal system of naming species of living things by giving each a name composed of two parts
Taxon
group of one or more populations of an organism or organisms seen by taxonomists to form a unit.
Genus
a principal taxonomic category that ranks above species and below family
Family
A taxonomic group of one or more genera, especially sharing a common attribute.
Order
A taxonomic rank used in classifying organisms, generally below the class, and comprised of families sharing a set of similar nature or character
Class
A group or set (of things or entities) with common characteristics, attributes, qualities or traits.
Phylum
A group of Classes with similar distinctive characteristics.
Division
A taxon at the rank of division. The second highest taxonomic classification for the kingdoms
Kingdom
In biology, kingdom is a taxonomic rank that is composed of smaller groups called phyla
Domain
The highest taxonomic rank of organisms in which there are three groupings: Archaea, Bacteria and Eukarya.
Phylogeny
The evolutionary development of a species or of a taxonomic group of organisms.
Characters
the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.
Molecular clock
technique in molecular evolution that uses fossil constraints and rates of molecular change to deduce the time in geologic history when two species or other taxa diverged.
