Classification Flashcards
Endothermic
Warm blooded.
Able to produce their own body heat.
Ectothermic
Cold blooded.
Unable to produce their own body heat.
Have to lay in the sun to warm up.
Identify the 5 kingdoms of living things
Animal, Plant, Fungi, Protists, Monera.
Vertebrates…
Have a backbone
Invertebrates…
DON’T have a backbone
What are the five groups of vertebrates?
Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians, Fish, Birds.
What are marsupials?
Marsupials are mammals that have pouches.
Once born, their babies crawl into these pouches and continue to develop.
What are monotremes?
Monotremes are the only mammals that lay eggs.
What are placentals?
Placentals carry the baby inside of them until it is fully developed, then they give birth to a live child
How do you use a tabular key?
A tabular key is in the form of a table.
You look at the first point and then whichever of the two options your animal or thing fits under.
You then follow the directions next to the option you fit under.
Example of the first point:
1. A) Hairless.. Go to 2
B) Not hairless.. Go to 3
Dichotomous Key
How do you use a dichotomous key?
A dichotomous key is in the form of branches.
It is much like a tabular key.
You write the title then two line running in different directions
They give two options and whatever option you fit under you go down to the options underneath.
What are the main characteristics of protists
They mainly live in water, the reason they are in this category is because they don’t fit anywhere else
What are the main characteristics of fungi
The cannot make their own food and they feed on other organisms
What are the main features of Monera
Most rely on other organisms for food, simplest and smallest living things and they breakdown and decompose.
What are the main features of Plants?
Organisms in the plant kingdom are classified by the way that they reproduce.
They absorb nutrients from the ground.
