Classification Flashcards
Give the classification of man
Animalia Chordata Mammalia Primate Hominidae Homo sapiens
What is classification?
Classification is the practise of putting organisms into groups and then giving them names.
Classification is hierarchical; meaning we start with big groups and progressively divide into smaller groups until we arrive at the single individual
What are the 7 main phyla that this topic looks at?
Porifera Cnidaria Annelida Echinodermata Mollusca Arthropoda Chordata
What phylum are sponges in?
Phylum Porifera
What are the main features of Phylum Porifera?(sponges)
Very simple structure
Only groups to lack a nerves system
What organisms are in Phylum Cnidaria
Corals, sea anemone and jellyfish
What are the main features of Phlum Cnidaria? (Jellyfish, coral, sea anemones)
All are aquatic
Radially symmetrical
Hollow gut
Diploblastic ( ectoderm and endoderm only)
Many show polyp and medusa forms during life cycle
Have cnidoblasts (nematocysts) stinging cells
Sac-like body cavity (the gut or enteron)
Have a nerve net,
Most are carnivorous
what is in Phylum Annelida?
segmented worms
what are the main features of Phylum Annelida? (Segmented worms)
have body segmentation solid ventral nerve chord possess chaetae: hair like structures used for locomotion closed circulatory system E.G, polychaete worms
what Phlum are Sea stars, sea dollars, sea cucumbers and Sea urchins in?
Phylum Echinodermata
what are the main features of Phlum Echinodermata? (Sea dollars, sea urchins)
typically have radial symmetry typically have 5-part body segmentation possess tube feet "spiny skin" mouth on ventral or lower surface sea stars and sea urchins typically have structures called pedicellariare
What are the three classes in Phylum mollusca?
cephlapoda
gastropoda
and bivalves
what is the feeding type of cephlapods?
Carnivores
what is the feeding type of grastropods?
some herbivores and some carnivores
what is the feeding type of bivalves?
filter feeders
what are the main features of Phylum Mollusca?
soft bodied animals
body divided into head, foot and visceral mass regions
many have shells secreted by the mantle
gastropod group have radula for feeding
what adaptation do gastropods have for feeding?
a radula
what are some examples of organisms in Class Gastropoda?
top shells cone shell sea hare slugs abalone limpets chiton
what are some examples of organisms in Class bivalve?.
clams
oysters
muscles
scallops
what are some examples of organisms in Class cephalopod?
octapus
squid
cuttle fish
What are the main features of Phylum Arthropoda?
body divided into head, thorax and abdomen regions
possess exoskeleton made of chitin
jointed legs or appendages
open circulation system
what are some organisms in Phylum Arthropoda class Crustacean?
hermit crabs lobster shrimp prawns crabs barnacles
what are the main features of Phylum Chordata?
Notochord Dorsal nerve chord (hollow) post-anal tail pharyngeal slits or clefts Circulatory system most are vertebrates (exception tunicate group)
what are two classes in the Phylum Chordata?
Class Osteichthyes and Class Chondrichthyes
what class are sharks and rays in?
class Chondrichthyes
What class are boney fish in?
Class osteichthyes
what are the main features of class Osteichthyes?
skeleton made of bone
gills covered by an operculum (gill plate)
fins are membranous with boney rays
what are the main features of class chondrichthyes?
skeletonmade of cartilage
mouth is in a ventral position
have separate gill openings or gill slits
fins are fleshy
