Classifacation And Phylogeny Flashcards
How does the binomial system work?
First name is the genus and second name is the species
The same genus shows a close relationship
Why do different species look similar?
Species live in the same environment
This means they experience similar selection pressures
Similar Alleles in the gene pool will have the selective advantage
Reproduction produces similar or the same proteins therefore similar characteristics
What is a classification system an example of?
A hierarchy
What is the order of classification?
Domain kingdom phylum class order family genus species
What is a hierarchy?
Smaller groups arranged into larger groups with no overlap between groups
Why do we need a system to organise species?
To understand relationships between organisms and keep track of changes
The system needs to be universal
What are ways to classify
DNA sequence
mRNA sequence
Amino acid sequence
Immunological- comparing similarities between self antibody shape
What is phylogenetic classification?
Arranges species into groups according to evolutionary origins and relationships
What is phylogeny
Tells us who is related to who and how closely related they are
