classical & operant conditioning Flashcards
classical conditioning
a type of learning in which one learns to link one or more stimulus to generate a response
operant conditioning
a type of learning in which behaviour strengthened when followed by a reinforcer and diminished when followed by a punishment
unconditioned stimulus
a neutral stimulus that triggers a natural and automatic response
unconditioned response
a response that is automatic
conditioned stimulus
when a neutral stimulus has been conditioned to trigger a conditioned response
conditioned response
a response to a conditioned stimulus that is not natural or automatic
acquisition
the initial stages of learning where new behavior is introduced and gradually strengthened to generate a conditioned response
extinction
the gradual weakening of a conditioned response resulting in the decrease or disappearing of that learnt behavior
stimulus discrimination
the ability to distinguish between two similar stimuli
shaping
slowly step by step shaping and moulding (conditioning) someone to behave a certain way
stimulus generalisation
the ability to behave in new situations in a way that has been learned in other similar situations
sponataneous recovery
behavior that believed to be extinct unexpectedly and quickly returns after a period rest.
