Fiction
A piece of literature created from the imagination not present as fact (not real).
Nonfiction
A piece of literature that refers to facts or true stories
Characters
A person, animal, being, creature, or thing in a story. Writers use characters to perform actions and speak dialogue, moving the story along a plotline.
Setting
The location and time frame in which the action of a narrative takes place.
Plot
The sequence of events of a piece of literature. It is composed of the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
Conflict
A struggle that occurs between two opposing forces in a piece of literature.
Internal Conflict
A conflict that a character has to within themselves (men vs. self).
External Conflict
A conflict that a character faces when engaged in a struggle with someone/something else. (man vs. man)`
Theme
The main idea or underlying meaning a writer explores in a novel, short story, or other literature.
Point of View (POV)
Refers to who is telling or narrating
1st Person
Uses pronouns such as “I, we, my,”
3rd Person
Uses pronouns such as “ he, she, they, them”
Exposition
The beginning of a story that is meant to relay background information about the main character, setting, event. or other elements of the narrative.
Rising Action
The part of the plot where the conflict is usually given and tensions start to grow.
Climax
The most intense moment in a story - Occurs between the rising action and falling action.
Falling Action
The section of the plot following the climax, in which the tension stemming from the story’s central conflict decreases and the story moves towards its conclusion.
Resolution
The end of the story. It occurs after the climax. It is when you learn what happens to the characters after the conflict is resolved.
