Classical Conditioning Flashcards
Assumption; Classical Conditioning
classical conditoning assumes that behaviour is caused by the pairing together of two stimuli to condition new behaviour.
Who was Classical conditioning developed by?
Pavlov
What research method was used to establish CC
Lab experiment
How was the research scientific?
- first time behaviour was studied scientifically
- quantitative data was obtained and recorded
Process OF CC
an unconditioned stimulus is paired with a conditioned stimulus to produce a conditioned response.
Stimulus
an external factor/event which is interpreted through our senses and can bring about a certain behaviour
Unconditioned stimulus
a stimulus that creates an unconditioned response.
Conditioned Stimulus
previously neutral stimuli that became conditioned after repeated association and now elicits an unconditioned response.
Unconditioned Response
behaviour that occurs naturally due to a given stimulus
Conditioned Response
an automatic response established by training to an ordinary stimulus
Neutral Stimulus
a stimulus which initially produces no specific/desired response.
Strengths of CC
- Scientific
- Applications show behaviour is learnt and therefore can be unlearnt
Weaknesses of CC
- Reductionist
- Deterministic
Who carries out a study to see if CC could be applied to humans?
Watson and Rayner
CLASSICAL STUDY
Aim of Classic Study
to see whether classical conditioning could be learnt in humans; and whether a fear response could also be learnt
