classic study- Raine Flashcards
What was his aim?
AO1
To see if their is a difference between NGRI murderers and controls
What was his sample?
AO1
41 NGRI murderers
41 controls- matched on age, education and medical diagnosis
What was the procedure?
AO1
All p’s given a PET scan , had to do a visual targeting task, after 10 mins they were injected with a radioactive tracer , after 32 mins they had a PET scan
What were the results?
AO1
more activity in the right amygdala
pre-frontal cortex lower activity
What was his conclusion?
AO1
There is a difference in brain glucose metabolism in certain areas between NGRI murderers and controls
Strengths
AO3
standardised procedure of the same timings and radio active tracer - can be repeated
Findings are reliable
Weaknesses
AO3
Small sample size- androcentric - cannot generalise findings to females
Strengths
AO3
Matched pairs- gender, age and medical diagnosis- reduces participant variables- increases validity
Weaknesses
AO3
Lab setting- lacks ecological validity- lowers validity of the findings
