Background
Robber’s cave- Background
- Sherif though social behaviour could not be studied by looking at individuals in isolation
- Recognised that social organisation differs between cultures and affect group practises, claimed groups have to be understood as part of social structure
- Conflict could be seen as prejudice, reduction of friction would be reducing prejudice= practical application

Method
Method- FIELD EXPERIMENT, REPEATED MEASURES DESIGN, took place in 3 STAGES, each a condition of the IV
IV- 3 STAGES of the experiment: in groups formation, friction phase, integration
DV- INTERGROUP BEHAVIOUR: measures by OBSERVING the boys BEHAVIOUR + FRIENDSHIP PATTERNS, TAPE RECORDING conversations/phrases, QUESTIONNAIRES filled out by boys on their ATTITUDES towards BOTH GROUPS
Directional hypothesis- The boys could be MANIPULATED into conflict by COMPETITION and then RESOLVE it by working together
Null hypothesis- There would be NO CONFLICT between the boys as a result of COMPETITION

Location- Took place at BOY SCOUTS of America camp in Oklahoma, America- called ROBBER’S CAVE

Procedure
Stage 1- INGROUP FORMATION: split into equal groups of 2, worked to achieve common goals, allowed ingroup dynamics to develop
Results- Called themselves Rattlers and Eagles, developed similarly hierarchy and status positions established= stability
