The sample consisted of 31 boys and 13 girls, aged between 5 and 17 years old. They were GRADED in terms of the SERIOUSNESS of their STEALING
what was the CONTROL group like?
similar in AGE, SEX and IQ to the thieves. Like the ‘thieves’ this group were EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED but they DIDNT STEAL
what did the children’s MOTHERS do?
They were INTERVIEWD to assess the CASE HISTORIES of the children.
what was the mental test used on the children by a psychologist to assess their intelligence called?
BINET scale
who interviewed the mothers and what information was gathered?
SOCIAL WORKERS and details about the child’s EARLY PSYCHIATRIC HISTORY eg- where they were born
what happened after the initial examinations took place?
Many of the children CONTINUED to meet with the PSYCHIATRIST weekly over a period of six months or more. The mothers talked over their PROBLEMS with the SOCIAL WORKER
what did the meeting over a period of time allow?
enabled a DETAILED CASE HISTORY to be recorded, and also enabled the psychiatrist to DIAGNOSE the children’s EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS

14, 12 had separations from mothers
what was the CONCLUSION made?
the children WOULDNT have BECOME OFFENDERS if they HADNT HAD EXPERIENCES that were HARMFUL to HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT
what would DAMAGE to a child and mother relationship cause?
affect the development of the SUPEREGO and leads to LESS SENSE of RIGHT and WRONG
what was the implication of the treatment?
treatment should be OFFERED to DELINQUENTS
