Health:
4 - Severe hazard
3 - Serious hazard
2 - Moderate hazard
1 - Slight hazard
0 - Minimal hazard
NFPA 704 Red
Flammability:
4 - Flammable gases, volatile liquids, pyrophoric materials
3 - Ignites at ambient temperatures
2 - Ignites when moderately heated
1 - Must be preheated to burn
0 - Will not burn
NFPA 704 Yellow
Instability:
4 - Capable of detonation or explosive decomposition at ambient conditions
3 - Capable of detonation or explosive decomposition with strong initiating source
2 - Violent chemical change possible at elevated temperature and pressure
1 - Normally stable, but becomes unstable if heated
0 - Normally stable
NFPA 704 White
Special Hazard:
OX = Oxidizing
SA = Simple asphyxiants
W = Reacts violently or explosively with water
Signal Words
Danger - Will cause death/injury
Warning - Could cause death/injury
Caution - Could cause minor/moderate injury
Notice - Not related to injury
Safety Instructions - Safety-related instructions
Orange Panel Numbers
Top numbers:
Followed by zero = One number adaquately indicates
Doubling number = Intensification of hazard
9 as 2nd/3rd number = Risk of spontaneous violent reaction
X = Will react dangerously with water
Bottom numbers: 4 digit UN number
DOT Placard Colors
Orange = explosive
Yellow = oxidizer/reactive
Red = flammable
White = health hazard
Blue = water reactive
Green = nonflammable gas
Radioactive Placard Parts
White I - Extremely low radiation levels
White II - Low radiation levels
White III - Higher radiation levels
Fissile - Can undergo fission
Empty - Used to store radioactive substances
Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction, Standard for Responders
NFPA 470
Military symbols (shapes and numbers)
1 Octagon = Greatest hazard (1.1 UN)
2 X = 1.2 UN
3 Triangle = 1.3 UN
4 diamond = 1.4 UN
DOT Placard Symbols
Explosive, oxidizer (flaming O), radioactive, flammable, nonflammable gas (high pressure tube), corrosive, poison.
Numbers: UN class and 4-digit number
Military symbols (color guys)
Red you’re dead (highly toxic)
Yellow you’re mellow (harassing agents)
White is bright (white phosphorous/spontaneously combustible)
Packing Groups
I = High Danger
II = Medium Danger
III = Low Danger
