Material deprivation
lacking physical necessities of life eg adequate housing, diet and income

Poor housing can affect a childs achievement
eg inadequate space = nowhere for the child to complete work
overcrowded= difficulty concentrating, sleep
sleep= difficult to concentrate in school
Poor housing also increases likelihood of illness, meaning children from poor homes are likely to have higher rates of absence
Likely problems to be faced by families on low incomes who may lack the resources to move or fix problems quickly

Howard- young people from poorer homes have lower intakes of energy, vitamins and minerals
Poor nutrition affects health, by weakening immune system
=more absences
Wilkinson- children from poorer homes are likely to face emotional or behavioural problems

Bernstein and Young- MC mothers are more likely to buy educational toys to encourage reasoning skills and stimulate intellectual development
Low income or unemployment may mean that educational books/toys aren’t bought and computers aren’t available at home
Bull- ‘cost of free schooling’
-Tanner argues schooling is costly as parents have to pay for transport, uniform, resources etc
-burden on WC families, may have ‘hand me downs’ which can lead to bullying
