What do CD theorists argue happens to W/C class children due to being socialized inadequately?

A

CD theorists- aquire basic values, attitudes and skill that are needed for educational success through primary socialization in the family.

Many W/C families fail to socialize adequately. Children grow up socially deprived- lack the cultural equipment needed to succeed at school- FAIL AND UNDERACHIEVE.

A

He is interested in the ways in which different social classes use language and how this impacts on educational success. Bernstein comes up with 2 kinds of Language codes that impact on educational achievement- The elaborate and restricted code.

A

What were Bernsteins findings?

A

Elaborate code more suitable to the demands of formal education.
Restricted code not inferior… Just different.
So Bernstein is useful because he helps us to understand one of the major questions in the sociology of education why working class students underperform in education and examinations.

A

A

The belief that being part of a group is more important than individual success. Contrast to middle class who think “loyalty should not hold you back”

A

Seeking pleasure now, rather than making sacrifices for future gains. So go straght into a low wage, rather than going on no wage to get a higher wage later on.

A

Seeing the present as more important than the future and so having no long-term plans.

Material deprivation: How does housing affect educational achievement?

A

*Difficult for students to study in overcrowded houses.
*Less room for educational activities.
*Disturbed sleep is sharing beds or bedrooms.
*Families in temperary accomodation are more likely to move around, results in disruption.
*Cold and damp housing can cause ill health.
*Students may worry if housing is a problem.

Material deprivation: How does poor diet affect educational achievement?

A

Marilyn Howard- Younger people from poorer homes- lower intakes of energy, vitamins and minerals. Poor nutrition affects health, for example- weakening immune system and lowering childrens energy levels.
*Students with poor diet- Less able to concentrate.
*Poor diet can lead to stunted growth
2006- 33% of children recieving free school meals achieved 5 GCSE’s (A-C)- compared to 61% not getting FSM.

Material deprivation: How does Low income affect educational achievement?

A

*Poorer families can miss out on educational opportunities.
*After school clubs
*Resources, books, pens etc.
*Travel
*The students themselves may need to work to supplement.
*More likely to have to take on domestic roles.
*Bull 1980- looks at cost of free schooling- transport, uniform, books, computers, calculators, music, and art equipment.- IT IS NOT FREE!!!
