class capabilities Flashcards

soil
soil is the more restrictive term referring to a collection of natural bodies with depth as well as breadth whose characteristics may be only indirectly related to their current vegetation and use.
land
is a broader term which includes among its characteristics not only the soil but other physical attributes, such as water supply, existing cover, and location with respect to cities, means of transportation, etc.
capability classes
Under the system set up by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, Eight land capability classes are recognized. These classes are numbered from 1 to 8. Soils having greatest capabilities for response to management and least limitations in the ways they can be used are in class 1. Those with least capabilities and greatest limitations are found in Class 8.
Class 1
Soils found in land class have few limitations that restrict their use. They can be cropped intensively, used for pasture, range, woodlans, or even for wildlifes. High water holding capacities. Need only ordinary crop management
class 2
have some limitations that reduce the choice of plants or require moderate conservation practices. Limited by one or more factors such as gentle slopes, moderate erosion hazards, inadequate soil depth.
class 3
have severe limitations that reduce the choice of plants or require special conservation practices or both. The amount of clean cultivated land is restricted. Soil cover such as grasses and legumes must be more prominent in the rotation used. Moderately steep slopes, high erosion hazard, shallow depth and restricted root zones, high water permeability, low water holding capacity, low fertility, moderate alkali or salinity. unstable soil structure.
class 4
Soils in this class can be used for cultivation, but there are very severe limitations on the choice of crops. Also, very careful management may be required. The choice of crops are very limited.
class 5
limited in their safe use by factors other than erosion hazards. limitations are as follows: subject to frequent stream overflow, growing season are too short for crop plants, stony or rocky soils, and ponded areas where drainage is not feasible.
Class 6
have very seve limitations which restrict their use to grazing, woodland, or wildlife. They are more rigid.
class 7
very sever limitations which restrict their use to grazing, woodland, or wildlife.
class 8
in this class soils are not used for any kind of commercial plant production
