Refers to factors outside education system that influence educational achievement of pupils.

Define material deprivation
Refers to living in poverty and lacking necessary materials like housing and income.
What is Material Deprivation usually measured by?
Whether or not a pupil has FSM as statistics show that those who are not on FSM are far more likely to pass and achieve 5 A* - C grades (including in math and English)

Housing

Housing issues:
Overcrowded conditions

Cold/ Damp conditions
Break down factor of health in Material Deprivation
Issues with health:
ill health - Howard - poorer families have less vitamin intake, can result in more absences, frequent illness and loss of concentration.
Emotional problems - Wilkinson - among 10 Year olds the poorer the social class the higher the amount of anxiety, depression and behavioural disorders. Leads to exclusion from lessons and underachievement.
Breakdown factor of finances in Material Deprivation
Issues with finance - lack of money results in underachievement as failure to buy necessary equipment and so if part time jobs taken up decrease study time etc leading to underachievement.
