What are the rules for working without a permit
There are specific circumstances under which a foreign national may work in canada without a permit but they must maintain valid temporary status
How is work defined
An activity for which wages are paid or commission is earned, or that is in direct competition with the activities of canadian citizens or PR in the Canadian labour market
What are the types of work permits
Open work permit and employer-specific/closed work permit
What is an open work permit and who can apply for one
Allows the holder to work for any employer in Canada (including yourself)
sTudent who graduated from a designated learning institution and who are eligible for Post-grad work permit program
People who applied for PR
Temp resident permit holder
What are restrictions to open work permits
An open work permit holder may not work for an employer
who regularly offers striptease, escort services or erotic massages
who is listed as ineligible on the list of employers who have been found non-compliant
What is an employer-specific work permit
Allows the holder to work according to the conditions stated on their permit. It cant be sued for sec work or benefit of an employer listed as ineligible due to non-compliance
What is employer compliance
Employers who hire foreign workers must respect certain conditions may be inspected for compliance
What happens for employers who are found non-compliant?
a monetary penalty
a ban from hiring temporary workers (these employers are ineligible to hire temporary workers for a period of time)
