Q
unexpected class change through marriage - sally -
"the last person in the world one would have expected to marry a rich woman"
A

jane and Rochester’s (nearly) marriage would have been considered very unconventional because of their vast class difference - Giving a governess — even a fictitious one — such a strong voice ran against common views of the proper role of such a woman -

status of upper class (men) make them necessary to please and respect-
“mr richard dalloway was made of finer material” but Lady Bruton needs hugh for he had the ‘art of writing letters to the times” and ‘was able to put things as editors liked them put”

A
Mr brocklehurtst ( based on Revd Carus Wilson, founder of the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge, attended by the four eldest Bronte sisters.) (Brocklehurst's character has a personal and narrative resonance.)
- a charcater that needs to be respected even though he is hypocritical and harsh. "i have again and again intimated that i desire the hair to be aranged closely, modestly and plainly"
but his daughters who walked in "They ought to have come a little sooner to have heard his lecture on dress",

Q
Mrs Dalloway dislikes the lower class unfairly even if it is her own family. does not like the thought of having ella henderson at her party because she will taint the 'mini society' that mrs d creates "why should i ask all the dull women in london to my parties"
even richard her husband relises and says "it was a very odd thing how much clarissa minded about her parties'
A
Lady ingram similarly to jane - "she looks too stupid for any game of the sort" - when playing charades
- for both gatherings and parties of the upper class is their 'mini society' that should not be tainted with lowly commoners so they are pushed to the side and made to observe as if they are a role model.

Q

Peter walsh is not blind to the class differences clarissa and he have - “he hadn’t blamed her, since in those days a girl brought up as she was, knew nothing” - upper class cant help it because thats the way they were taught

A
jane is also aware that rochesters class makes it necessary for him to marry someone sutitable - "i saw he was going to marry her, for family, perhas political reasons because her rank and connextions suited him" -
- whilst observing she realises that "the less i felt justified for judging and blaming them for acting in conformity to ideas and principles instilled in them from childhood
