Class 3- effects of urbanization on watersheds Flashcards
What does urban development do the stream and the floodplain?
- wider and deeper bc of higher and faster volume of water in stream
- the deeper the stream get, the less connected to the floodplain.stream can’t dispense energy to floodplain.
- more sediment
- floodplain limit line moves higher.
What is the flood hazard limit?
- determined by 100 yr return storm volume
- aren’t accurate, shifting baselines.
explain the aggradation phase in geomorphology
-sediment enters stream from development
Why do we care about very fine sediments?
if they are 63 micros/smaller, they are very absorptive of chemicals. lots of small particles tend to clump together, and the big clumps chemical levels very high
by what standard do we judge surface water?
by the provincial water quality objectives
What are the implications of the cone of depression on ground water?
-cone area under different form of pressure, it alters the speed of water going from saturated zone to unsaturated zone.
What are wellhead protection sensitivity areas?
restricts salt/nutrient contamination in drinking well areas.
