Class 3 Flashcards

1
Q

What are the illuminating engineering society (IES) standards?

A

Set the general lighting recommendations on how much light should fall on each object or surface in order to achieve satisfactory lighting conditions

It applies to the quality of light, its perception (brightness/contrast=foot candle) and color quality (CRI)

Q

What is the reason for needing more light to do certain things as we age

A

Our lens on our retina gets thicker and so reduces the amount of light captured

Also, our pupil size gets smaller with age, which causes even less light to enter

Q

Things to take into account with light distribution and balance and how it can cause downsides

A

With badly positioned fixtures, it can cause dark spots or a fluctuation in light.

-choose lights that expel light evenly instead of straight down for general lights

-avoid obstructions between light fixtures and the work stations

-use light color paint in task oriented spaces

Q

What is the downside of glare.

What is direct glare and reflected glare?

A

Can cause visual discomfort and decrease a persons ability to see.

Direct glare is cause by bright lights from poorly positioned light fixtures or daylight went wrong though windows and skylights. The source may be from direct view of the sun or clouds or from reflections from buildings.

Reflected flare can be cause by light reflecting off computer screens, shiny desk surfaces and windows

Q

What is contrast and its characteristics

A

The difference in color between an object and its background

Too little contrast makes it hard to read or see

Too much can cause eye strain

Q

How can light flickering be negative and how can it occur

A

Can cause headaches and eye statins/discomfort for some individuals

It can occur due to:
-The lamp source
-the age of the lamp
-electrical malfunctions
-improper setup

Q

Blue light and its pros and cons

A

Exposure to artificial blue light during the day can strengthen the circadian timing and promote positive health effects

Being exposed to it at night maybe cause sleep disturbances or other negative effects

Q

How does light sensitivity affect others

A

In individuals can be triggered by any type of light source, such as including LED, fluorescent and even natural light

The main factors that can affect this are the brightness, the flickering and color of the light
