Class 23: Valve Disorders Flashcards
what is infective endocarditis
- infection of the heart valves or endocardial surface of the heart
inflammation from infective endocarditis affects the ________
cardiac valves
what causes infective endocarditis
- bacteria most common
- also viruses, & fungi
what are the primary lesions of infective endocarditis
- vegetations
what do the vegetations of infective endocarditis consist of
- fibrin
- platelets
- microbes
that adhere to the valve surface or endothelium
what happens if portions of the vegetations from infective endocarditis are lost intro circulation
- can cause emboli
what do emboli result in from infective endocarditis
- strokes, kidney disease, damage to spleen, pulmonary emboli, limb infarction
what are risk factors for infective endocarditis
- IV drug use
- prosthetic valves
- acquired valve disease (ex. aortic stenosis)
- congenital heart disease
- pacemakers
- marfan syndrome
- cardiomyopathy
what are symptoms of infective endocarditis
- low fever
- chills
- weakness
- malaise & fatigue
- anorexia
what are oslers nodes
- tender, painful red or purple pea-ized lesions on fingertips or toes
what are janeways lesions
- flat, painless, small red spots on palms & soles
what are specific findings w infective endocarditis
- splinter hemorrhages
- petechiae
- oslers nodes
- janeways lesions
- roths spots
- murmur
what are splinter hemorrhages
- occur in nail beds
why might there be petechiae with infective endocarditis
- fragmentation & microembolization of vegetative lesions
what are roth’s spots
- hemorrhagic retinal lesions
