class 2 (ch 3, cellular adaptation, injury and death). Flashcards
where to all forms of disease begin?
alterations to cells
what is adaptation?
happens to maintain homeostasis. it is reversible, structural, or functional response both to normal or physiologic conditions and to advers or pathologic conditions.
cellular adaptations to advers conditions
they are usually only temprarily successful.
what does altered cellular and tissue biology result from?
adaptation, injury, neoplasia, aging or death.
injury may be what?
reversible or irreversible
what are the types of injury classifications?
chemical, hypoxic, free radical, intentional, unintentional, immunologic, infection, and inflammatory.
what is atrophy?
a decrease or shrinkage in cellular size. it can affect any organ but is most common in skeletal muscle , the heart, secondary sex organs, and the brian.
physiologic atrophy?
occurs with early development
pathologic atrophy?
result of decreases in workload, pressure, use, blood supply, nutrition, hormonal stimulation, and nervous stimulation.
ubiquitin-proteosome pathway
primary pathway of protein catabolism and catabolism involves proteosomes
