Q

symbolic capital and violence

A

•MC habitus - symbolic capital which is deemed to have worth or value
•school devalues the WC habitus with their clothes or accent which is deemed as tasteless or worthless
•Bourdieu calls this withholding of symbolic capital or symbolic violence - WC tastes and lifestyles as inferior, symbolic violence reinforces the class structure and keeps the WC ‘in their place’ (they are criticised for their lack of symbolic capital or type of symbolic capital)
•Archer working class pupils felt that to be successful in education they needed to change how they talked and presented themselves, educational success was the cost of ‘losing yourself’ - unable to access ‘posh’ MC spaces such as uni and professional careers which are seen as ‘not for the likes of us’

•investing in ‘styles’ - use branded clothing like nike
•social suicide if didnt conform, earned symbolic capital from appearance, got approval from peer groups and safety from bullying
•conflict with school dress code, teachers opposing street style - bad taste
•MC habitus sees WC nike identity as tasteless
•nike styles play a part in WC students rejection of higher education
•WC may choose to self-exclude from education as it doesnt fit with their identity
