Class Flashcards
What is class shown to affect in the play?
Education, opportunities, quality of life, support
Compare how the different classes live
Living - The milkman is “up to here with hard luck stories” while the Lyons can live in “that big house on the hill” which is seen as a “palace” by the working class. Mrs Johnstones’ children are “hungry” and “starvin” and cannot afford new toys whereas the Lyons are able to give Edward a “toy gun” which Edward gives to Mickey showing generosity from the working class.
How is the middle class presented as detrimental to the working class?
Mickey is “fucked off from everywhere” by the middle class and this leads to his addiction and wishes to feel “invisible”. Furthermore, Mickey loses everything due to class differences including Linda, the “one thing left” in his life as revealed by Mrs Lyons “points out Edward and Linda” to him in the stage directions cementing herself as a catalyst and reason for the end of the play.
