What is stigmatization?
-a process of devaluation 🡪 perceptions, understandings, attitudes, and behaviours of individuals who are stigmatised and thus devalued, discredited, and dehumanized
What is stigma management?
The process of concealing/disclosing aspects of ones identity to minimize social stigmas
What is cultural capital?
he total sum of “usable resources and powers” that individuals have and use in their everyday practices and social interactions
What are three forms of cultural capital?
1- The embodied form – mental and bodily dispositions
2- The objectified form – cultural products (e.g., artworks)
3- The institutionalized form – educational credentials (e.g., BA degree)
What is cultural competence?
Educational qualifications and cultural experiences and practices/how to act in a particular social or institutional setting
Primary adjustments:
a process of modifying, adapting, or altering individual or collective patterns of behavior so as to bring them into conformity with other such patterns, as with those provided by a cultural environment.
Eamples:
Dress, speech, social behaviour
Symbols of class status:
Behavior(Etiquette, dress, way of speaking, ect)
Consequences of primary adjustment:
experiencing psychological stress
feelings of being a cultural outsider despite being a social insider
overcompensating for real or perceived personal failures
What is identity ambivalence?
the state of having mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about conflicting things in ones identity
