Class 1 - Interdisciplinary Nature of Movement Diagnosis Flashcards
How does the authout Adrian Lees define ‘Technique Analysis’ (another way of saying movement diagnosis)?
An analytical method that is used to understand the way in which sports skills are performed and, through this understanding, provide the basis for improved performance.
It can also lead to injury prevention and can be used in coaching, teaching, lab science, and the clinic.
Name the approaches to technique analysis
Qualitative:
- phase analysis
- temporal analysis
- critical features
Quantitative:
- critical featrues (key variables)
- tool: video
- tool: forceplate
Describe a phase analysis
breaks movement down into segments of different movements
(times where direction/purpose of movement is the same)
What are possible aspects of a phase analyss (7)
intertia= resistance to movement
- overcome movement of intertia to create force
- is a linear variable
- mass closer to point of rotation = lower moment of inertia
angular displacement
angular movement
centre of mass
velocity
acceleration
radius
Describe the relationship between angular displacement, centre of mass, and inertia
angular displacement lower = closer to centre of mass = decreased moment of inertia
describe the relationship between velocity, acceleration, and distance
velocity will always determine acceleration and therefore will determine distance
Define a temporal analysis
breaks up a movement into how much time each phase takes
-> good for consistent, cyclical movemenets
Define a critical feature
compontnet of the movement that are essential to the performance of a skill
What are the steps to identifying a critical feature? (3)
- use your knowledge of activity (research)
- observe the movement
- use a deterministic model
what is this models name and lable it
Hierarchical/Deterministic Model
Red = results
Orange = Mechanical Correlates
Green = Factors that determine the correlates
Define critical features in a quantitative context
- what about the movement is important
- must be specific and constant
What can be analyzed in a video?
angular variables using protractor (displacement, acceleration, velocity
linear cariables using ruler (displacement, acceleration, velocity)
What can be alayzed with a forceplate?
force, mass, and joint movements (inertia)
Define the hierarchical/deterministic model
a modeling paradigm that determines the relationships between a movement outcome measure and the biomechanical factors that produce such a measure
Create a deterministic model for this image

What are the 4 steps of QMD
- preperation
- observation
- evaluation and diagnosis
- intervention
Describe phase 1 of the QMD
Preperation
- research the movement
- break movement down into phases using proper anatomical terminology to describe what happens in each phase including muscle activation
- identify goal of movement
- identify critical features and planes in which these features can be best observed
Describe phase 2 of QMD
Observation
Qualitative Analysis:
- watch video, analyze if this is sufficient data collection
- frame grabs of critical features
Quantitative analysis:
- digitize
Describe phase 3 of QMD
Evaluation
- analyze data
- find ways to represent it (graphing, visual analog scales)
Describe phase 4 of QMD
Intervention
- correcting technique
- build strength
- psychological intervention
