A force which pushes
Verticals
Are called posts or columns
Horizontals
Are called lintels or beams
Truss
A structural member made up of component parts to span long distances
Masonry
May be stone, brick or concrete block (unity masonry)
One of the most ancient building materials
Necessarily handcrafted
Great compressive strength
Arch
An arch is always a curved structural opening
Very natural shape for masonry
Arches come in different types
Barrel vault
A barrel vault may be though of as an extruded arch— a series of arches forming a tunnel effect
Dome
Arches brought into three dimensions
Domes are sometimes called shell structure
Concrete
“CEMENT” is usually a misnomer
CONCRETE is made from cement, sand, aggregate, and water
Excellent strength in compression
Steel
Steel is an alloy of iron and other metals with carbon
Excellent strength in tension
Compact size with tremendous strength
By nature, easy to prefabricate
Reinforced concrete
Concrete is a compressive material—breaks in tension
Steel is a great tensile material
Together, they form Reinforced Concrete, capable of forming great structures
Capable of PLASTICITY—the ability to be molded into any form
Cantilever
Overhanging structure with no support at its end
