Clairs revision small animal AnP Flashcards
What happens to the Embryo at 4Weeks?
Forming vertebrae + limb buds
20mm in length
What happens to the Embryo at 5weeks??
Eye lids, internal ears and teeth start to form
35mm in length
What happens to the foetus at 6Weeks?
Digits and external genitalia are well developed
60mm in length
What happens to the Foetus at 7weeks?
Ossification of vertebrae + some long bones
100mm in length
What happens to the Foetus at 8weeks?
Has hair and pads
150mm in length
What happens to foetus at 9 weeks?
Foetus is usually delivered
Function of the ovary?
Produce eggs ready for fertilisation
Secrete Oestrogen and Progesterone
Function of the Uterus?
Provides an environment for development of Embryo
Function of Testes?
Produce sperm and Testosterone
Function of the Scrotum?
Holds the testes out side the body
Function of the Cremaster Muscle?
Allows raising + lowering of the testiest
Function of the Sertoli Cells?
Provide oestrogen’s + nutritive fluid for sperm
Function of the Epididymus?
Transfer sperm 2 vas deference
Also acts as a storage organ
Function of the Bulbo-urethral gland?
Contributes to seminal fluid
Function of the Prepuce?
Lined with mucos epithelium protects penis
Pushed back during mating protects distal end of penis
Name 2 accessory glands found in the male cats genital system?
Bulbo-urethral gland
Prostate
How many pairs of teats dose a female guinea pig have?
Single pair of teats
Describe the behaviour of the bitch during Pro-oestrus?
- increasingly attractive to males
- more active, restless urinate more
- will not stand to be mated
Behaviour of bitch during Metoestrus?
Nesting behaviour begins
She will not stand to be mated
Term of pregnancy may become more dependant or less
Bitches behaviour during Anoestrus?
No sexual activity
Not attractive to males
Behaviour of bitch during Oestrus?
Flirting bitch will allow to be mated
What dose the hormone Gonadotrophic releasing do?
Released from the hypothalamus in response to increasing day length
What dose the hormone Oxytocin do?
Contraction of uterus
Milk let down
What dose the Lutenising hormone do?
This hormone causes ovulation to occur
Function of Testosterone?
Production of sperm
Secondary sexual characteristics
Function of Relaxin?
Produced by the corpus luteum in stages of pregnancy
Describe the development of the Zygote from fertilisation to the formulation of the Morula?
- Following fertilisation. The zygote will travel down fallopian tube dividing cells as it goes (via mitosis)
Eventually they form a solid ball of cells called morula
What is the Ovum called once it has been fertilised??
Zygote
Name two germ cell layers?
Ectoderm
Mesoderm
When dose implantation of the embryo take place in the bitch?
14-20 after Ovulation
What is the correct name for the water bag?
Chorio-allantosis
What is the correct name for the slime bag?
Allanto-amnion
What are the narrow bands between the placenta and the extra embryonic membranes called?
Marginal Haematomas
What colour is the vaginal discharge of a queen at parturition?
Brown
At what stage of embryonic development do limb buds appear??
Limb buds appear at 4 weeks of age.
Describe describe the process of Spermatogenesis??
- Testies are made of seminiferous tubules lined with spermatogenic + sertoli cells
- Spermatogenic cells are stimulated by testosterone to produce sperm thro process of mitosis + meiosis
- Stertoli cells produce nutritive fluid which nourishes sperm
- Leydig are stimulated by LH to produce testosterone
Whats the difference between a spontaneous ovulation and induced ovulation?
Induced ovulation - only ovulate if married (cats, rabbits, ferrets)
Spontaneous ovulation - dont need mated to ovulate (dogs, rats, guinea pigs)
What effect the administration of progestogen has on the oestrus cycle of a bitch if it is given during pro-oestrus?
Can cause cystic endometrial hyper plasma and pyometra
What happens to the embryo at 3Weeks?
Allantosis formed
Embryo approx 5mm in length
