CLAIM
What are the 3 types of claim?
Fact, Value and Policy
this type of claim
focuses on observable, verifiable events and
measurable topics that will convince you that
something existed, exists, or will exist.
CLAIM OF FACT
These assert something that can be qualified.
They make judgments based on certain
standards on whether something is right or
wrong, good or bad, or something similar.
CLAIMS OF VALUE
Examining the topic in terms of the
phrases, “it is better to…, it is
unethical that…, it is wrong to…, …is
more beautiful than….
CLAIMS OF VALUE
that specific actions should be chosen as
solutions to a particular problem. You can easily identify
them because they usually begin with “should”, “ought
to”, or “must”.
CLAIMS OF POLICY
stated directly in the passage.
Explicit Textual Evidence
Not stated directly, but reader understands it
because of clues in the text
