Name & Define the first stage of Cognitive Development
Sensorimotor. Ages 0 - 2 years. Child begins to interact with their environment, using senses and physical movement. Remaining egocentric and the appearance of object permanence appears.
Name & Define the second stage of Cognitive Development
Pre-operational stage. Ages 2 - 6/7 years old. Child learning to speak and developing their imaginative focus. Remaining egocentric and question things around them and trying to develop an understand of things.
Name & Define the third stage of Cognitive Development
Concrete operational stage. Ages 6/7 - 11/12 years old. Child stops being egocentric, able to understand the points of view of others. Become more capable of logical thought.
Name & define the fourth and final stage of Cognitive Development
Formal operational stage. Ages 11 - 16+ years. No longer a problem with logical thought and thinking becomes increasingly abstract.
Define ‘Egocentric’
Thinking only of themselves. Without understanding or regard for the feelings of others.
Define ‘Object permanence’
An understanding that objects continue to exist when they can’t be seen or touched.
