CIVILISATION VS SAVAGERY Flashcards
Ralph and Jack facing each other and seeing differences.
“The two boys faced each other. There was the brilliant world of hunting…there was the world of longing and baffled common sense.”
Ralph almost forgetting his purpose.
“Smoke.” A strange thing happened in his head…something flittered there in front of his mind like a bat’s wing.”
Jack’s purpose for the choir.
“They can be-what do you want them to be?” “Hunters.”
Ralph and Jack’s conflict about rules.
“But rules are the only thing we’ve got!” But Jack was shouting against him, “Bollocks to the rules!”
Description of Jack as a chief.
“Jack, painted and garlanded, sat there like an idol. There were piles of meat on green leaves near him…”
Piggy about a clock.
“I’ve been thinking…about a clock. We could make a sundial.”
Piggy about contributing to society.
“Piggy was…so full of pride at this contribution to society… that he helped to fetch the wood.”
Piggy about making a fire.
“Just an ordinary fire…Just a smoke signal so we can be rescued. Are we savages or not?”
Piggy’s “what’s better” speech - talking about Jack vs Ralph mentality.
“Which is better - to be a pack of painted niggers like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph is?”
“Which is better - to have rules and agree or to hunt and kill?”
Roger not throwing rocks at the littleun.
“There was a space around Henry…into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of old life….the protection of parents and school and the policemen and the law.”
The description of the conch shattering
“…the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist […] then there was complete silence.”
Piggy suggesting a meeting.
“I suspect we’ll want to know all their names…we ought to have a meeting.”
Piggy’s glasses becoming a tool for lighting the fire.
“His specs - use them as burning glasses!”
Jack’s exclamation about blood.
“You should have seen the blood!”
Jack disliking Ralph’s mentality because of its similarity to Piggy.
“He’s like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn’t a proper chief.”
