Confederate States of America
A nation formed by eleven Southern States in 1861. South Carolina was the first to leave the Union. This was to be the name of the new country. A new country based on Slavery.
Richmond, Virginia
Capital of the Confederate States of America. The capital was moved to Montgomery, Alabama during the last year of the war.

First Battle Bull Run
The first major battle of the Civil War, won by confederates in 1862
Battle of Shiloh
The fierce civil war battle at Pittsburg landing on the Tennessee River, won by Union forces in 1862. A major Victory for General Ulysses grant of the Union Army.
Cavalry
Soldiers on horseback The South had the best cavalry. Jeb Steward (confederate) invented many tactics for using horses in warfare.
Seven Days’ Battle
A week long battle on Virginia’s York Peninsula in Which the confederate forced Union forces to retreat in 1862.
Battle of Antietam
A civil war battle, a military draw but a political victory for the Union, near Sharpsburg MaryLand in 1862. Europe withdrew support to the South.
Emancipation Procclamation
The announcement on Jan. 1st, 1863 by President Lincoln that all slaves in Confederate territory would be considered free. He could not free the slaves in the North without changing the Constitution. This required approval from Congress.
