- pea ridge- longest, west of Mississippi River, also known as “the battle of elk horn tavern”, saved MO for the union on March 1862
- prairie grove- south of Fayetteville, Union won and marched to LR on December 7, 1862 & fought between confederate army & federal forces
the most important events that led to the secession of Arkansas
- fear of abolition- total, immediate end to slavery
* southern consciousness- the belief that southern way of life was impossible to interact with the northern’s
division of AR: & Thomas hindman:
division of AR: 60,000 confederacy & 8,000 union
Thomas hindman: sent to AR to keep it from seceding from the confederacy

emancipation proclamation: freed slaves that were living in states that were fighting against union

15- all men can vote
how did Union soldiers treat Confederate soldiers, nonmilitary southerners, and spies?
- union took captive & hung confederate spies and soldiers (David Dodd)
- they captured bushwhackers and held them at different places
- union blamed confederate soldiers for bad behavior during battle
