-In the beginning of the Civil War, only whites served in the military. Then whites were allowed.
-Still they suffered from discrimination

Union wins
DAY 1:
- South pushes the North out of town, into Cemetery Ridge (High Ground) South wins
- North takes High Ground
DAY 2:
- South attacks North
- Most IMPORTANT moment at Little Round Top
- Chamberlain ordered a Bayonet charge -> South was confused and surrendered
North wins
DAY 3:
- Lee wanted to charge: he fired cannons
- His men charged; many under Pickett’s command
- The North has more guns and cannons
- Men who made it to cemetery ridge are killed
Retreat to the South, and NEVER attacked the North again
Vicksburg
The Union won: had control over the Mississippi river, which was an important transportation system.

Freedmen
-Black people began to disobey (avoided politics)
> worked slowly or broke pieces to the owner’s crops
-Ignored the pass system(to see if you had free papers) and sometimes moved to other areas
-IMP: better education; workers to help keep families together
-AME: African Methodist Episcopal > symbol of strength and leadership
-Became involve in politics
-“Traditional View” = Lazy because of warfare, they didn’t get government money. They helped each other.

Gave citizenship to all people born in the US, and said everyone should receive equal treatment before the law
(black people can serve on juries, tensity in court etc.)
15th Amendment
All Male citizens (regardless of race) over 21 have rights to vote
Sharecropping
- Share cropper farmed the land and gave mos of his crops to the landowners
- Worked to pay off debts
- If they had left overs they might be able to buy their own land
- share croppers were not only black > MAJORITY NOT ALL*
- enjoyed the freedom they had & did as they pleased*
- only the plantation owners benefited*
