What is/was reconstruction?
Time frame after civil war in which US gov began to rebuild the south + also the process of southern states readmittance to the union
How did Reconstruction succeed?
Blacks entered political office. Hiram Revels became first black man to serve in US Senate
How did Reconstruction fail?
Many blacks became sharecroppers

Sharecropping
Blacks & poor whites use land and are given supplies & a place to live in exchange for their crops. Cycle of debt, another form of slavery
Freedman’s Bureau
established in 1865 by Congress to help former black slaves and poor whites in the South in the aftermath of the U.S. Civil War (1861-65). provided food, housing and medical aid, established schools and offered legal assistance.
Ku Klux Klan
In response to freedmans bureau. Meant to terrorize southern blacks and “keep them in their place”
Black codes
Prohibited blacks from owning firearms, required them to be employed
Placed restrictions on their freedom
13th amendment
No slavery or involuntary servitude besides for punishment for crime
14th amendment
First, anyone born on American soil is guaranteed full American citizenship. Second, no state can strip any of its residents of the full privileges of American citizenship. Third, all citizens are guaranteed “due process of law,” which means that states cannot pass arbitrary or unfair laws. Fourth, all citizens are guaranteed “equal protection of the laws,” which means that states cannot discriminate against particular groups of citizens.

The right to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the US based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude
