Missouri Compromise (1820)
- Admitted Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state
- Prohibited slavery north of the 36° 30’ latitude line in the Louisiana Territory
Compromise of 1850
Series of five laws attempting to resolve sectional tensions over slavery
1. California was admitted to the Union as a free state
2. US gov took some of Texas’ debts
3. New Mexico and Utah became official territories
4. Abolished slave trade in D.C in exchange for a new fugitive slave law
Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854)
- Repealed Missouri Compromise
- Established territories of Kansas & Nebraska
- Allowed for popular sovereignty
Fugitive Slave Law
Required slaves be returned to their owners even in free states
Dred Scott decision
The Supreme Coutry ruled that “Slaves were not citizens and therefore hand no rights, so the “property rights” of slave owners could not be violated”
What happened when Lincoln was elected president?
The South tried to secede, but Lincoln refused, sending troops to force them to stay part of the US
Which Amendments were added to the Constitution after the Civil War?
- 13th: Abolished slavery in the US and territories
- 14th: Granted citizenship to everyone “born or naturalized in the US” / equal protection
- 15th: Prohibits the denial of voting rights based on race
Reconstruction (1865-1877)
- Period after Civil War ended
- Democrats held power in the South & limited African Americans’ freedom for two years
- Anger passed over, increased support for Radical Republicans in Congress, leading to passing of 14th &15th Amendments
Jim Crow laws
- The South wanted to deny African Americans their rights
- Segregated public facilities, preventing black from voting
Plessy v Ferguson (1896)
- Supreme Court supported racial segregation laws
- Separate but equal facilities were legalized
