The economy in the north was industrialized while in the south it was agricultural and so they needed slaves.
Northern states wanted the new states created from the western territory to be “free states” while the South wanted them to be “slave states.”

Nat Turner led a revolt against plantation owners.

How did West Virginia become a state?
The eastern counties of Virginia liked slavery and the western counties didn’t. This led to the formation of West Virginia
