Fugitive slave act
A law that prohibited anyone from helping escaped slaves, including those in northern states. Any person who aided a runaway slave could be arrested or fined. When this became law, many escaped slaves made their way farther to Canada.
Gettysburg
Fought over three days, it was the northern most battle of the war. The union was victorious and the battle was considered a turning point of the war.

Lincolns most famous speech, and one of the most famous speeches in American history.
General Ulysses s. Grant
The commander of the Union forces during the last part of the war.
General Robert e lee
The commander of the confederate army durning the civil war
Abraham Lincoln
The president of the United States during the Civil war. He was assassinated five days after the war ended.
Massachusetts 54th regiment
The first black regiment allowed to fight in the civil war. They proved that African American soldiers could fight as bravely as white soldiers could.

The period of rebuilding the nation after the civil war

Secession
The act of leaving the Union. The states that seceded claimed not to be part of the United States any more. They formed their own government. The United States government never recognized them as a separate nation.

Union general who believed in total war
Total war
Sherman believed by destroying homes, farms business and anything else in his path , he forced the south to surrender because everyone , not just the army would suffer.

The organization that helped slaves escape north to freedom
