What does an agency do?
Strives to shift the path (it can also be trying to keep the old path)
People enacting agency are either trying to change the structure or oppose the structure
What is structure?
Institutionalizes practices that shape or limit action
Most are ideational
How are markets defined as in globalization when being compared to transnational movements?
Defined as access to markets and rarely deals with the environmental or human aspects of those markets
What is the difference between a centrifugal force and a centripetal force?
A centrifugal force is pulling apart, whereas a centripetal force is pulling together
How does centrifugal force effect globalization?
The more globalization tries to make us the same, the more some people push back
People crave group association, or an identification of who they are
Why do some people use centrifugal force?
They push back to express their difference against homogenization
What is democratization?
Locus of opposition to authoritarian regimes
Exacerbates internal tensions
What is privatization?
State directed development
Supported by centre left civil society
What was the difference between developments of decentralization from the 1980s and the 1990s?
In the 1980s, development was fostered by authoritarian regimes (can be a benefit because you don’t have limits on your actions)
In the 1990s, development was fostered through good goernance
What is economic liberalization?
Reduced state power (reduce welfare provision and rent seeking behavior)
Stimulate self help groups
How does the society tend to be in the global north?
Civil society tends to be middle class Participate in international summits (G8 and WTO) More involved with dealing the problems outside the state, less grass roots movement)
What is a civil society?
Collectively of social organizations not controlled by the state (association, community based, interest groups)
Increasingly providing traditional state and services
What is liberal tradition?
Check on the power of the state and corporations (democratic governance, citizenship rights/obligations, representation, rule of law)
What is sociological discourse?
Repository of resistance
Source of a counter hegemony
What is international cooperation discourse?
Transnational social movements
