Who were the Dixicrats?
Segregationist political party.
Arose due to a Southern regional split in opposition to the Democratic Party.
Apart of congress - support segregation legislation.
Jim Crowe Laws.
Established a formalised system of
segregation to keep former slaves “in their place”.
Overcame rights given by the 13th (right to freedom) + 15th (citizenship) Amendments.
Literacy test + Grandfather Clause.
Introduced in South as provisions to deny the vote to AA - participation in elections was less than 1%.
Plessy v Ferguson.
Gov-funded facilities could be segregated if they were “separate but equal”.
White facilities always superior due to unequal funding - indirect discrimination.
13th, 14th, 15th Amendments.
13th - abolished slavery (right to freedom).
14th - “Equal Protection of the law” for all citizens.
15th - granted enfranchisement to AA as US citizens
