- High expectation from black people after WWII
1845: Black people had high expectations after returning from WWII as they fought the war alongside white American soldiers.
This resulted in colour prejudice declining slightly
In 1948 Truman issued Executive order ending segregation in the army
In 1954 Desegregation of the army was complete
Black people began to migrate from the south to northern cities and began to integrate with white people.
Black education expands as educated black leadership emerges

Black Americans migrated from the south to northern cities, because hey were concentrated in cities they were easier to organise
Black education expanded in the north and south
New educated black leadership emerged
They also depended on christian leadership and their churches

1945: On returning from WWII blacks had higher expectations for civil and political rights.
Colour prejudice declined as whites believed less and less that blacks should be denied equal opportunity.
Mass media, especially television highlighted the brutal aggressive treatment of blacks in the south
During the cold war America claimed to be a leader of the free world against evil communism.
In order to retain the respect of countries in Europe it would have to reform and change its attitude towards black people.
The NAACP, national association for the advancement of coloured people and CORE Congress of racial equality were set up and worked for racial desegregation.
