Civil rights movement (America) Flashcards
Post WW2 era:
After World War II, the United States still faced racial segregation and discrimination, notably through Jim Crow laws in the South.
Race relations
Race relations in the North were marked by de facto segregation, while in the South, segregation was legally enforced, leading to significant disparities in living conditions and opportunities.
KKK
The Ku Klux Klan played a role in promoting white supremacy and using violence to intimidate and oppress African Americans.
Activism and Protest for Civil Rights:
Freedom Rides (USA)
Freedom Rides were a series of protests in 1961 where activists, including James Zwerg and John Lewis, challenged segregation on interstate buses and in bus terminals. They raised awareness of racial injustice and pressured the federal government to enforce desegregation laws.
