Who was Emmett Till?
14 year old boy who was tortured badly and murdered by Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam.
Civil Rights violations have been occurring since the founding of our country but why now? Why do people want to change inequality now?
We are seeing more and more violence and it is getting harder to ignore.
What is the story of Emmett Till?
A boy who visited his cousins in Mississippi. “Flirted” with a women named Carolyn Bryant. Days later he was kidnapped, tortured, and killed by her husband Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam. Medgar Evers (NAACP) helped the family with their case but they did not win. This was one event that brought attention to the civil rights movement.
Institutional racism and Individual’s bigotry
System of inequality based on race. it can occur in Institutions such as public Gov’t bodies, privet buisness’,schools, etc.GROUP
Someone who has intolerance towards other peoples opinions. Ex. An Intolerant racist INDIVIDUAL
Seperate but Equal
Segregation but the blacks and the whites should be equal.
“Plessy VS Ferguson”
Victory- forced black train cars to be exactly the same
Brown VS Board of Education
1954, led to the Supreme Court ruling for desegregation in school.
The south disagrees and trys to stall this desegrigation.
“with all deliberate speed.”

Southern schools dont begin to desegrigate until around 10 yrs later.

Led to desegregation on busses by the Supreme Court
It lasted 381 days. Led by MLK. was a nonviolent mass protest.
MLK and Non violence, confrontational, Civil disobedience
MLK led Non violent protests and marches. This does not mean they were not confrontational. To Disobey a law that you find unjust or immoral
Freedom Rides
a movement to integrate busses (started in DC and ended in Louisiana) (1961- JFK is president)
SNCC
SNCC- student non violent coordinating comitee- started the sit-in movements
Sit-Ins
greensborough NC was the first sit-in
grass roots- They started very simple and then bloomed into something much more powerful
These protests tried to improve equality in public places like diners.
SCLC
southern christian leader committee
Elebaker- helps MLKJ organize these kids in the sit-ins and help spread the movement
CORE
(congress on racial equality) organized the freedom rides
