Q

Who was Emmet Till and how was his murder important for civil rights?

A

Emmet Till was a 14 year old boy from Chicago who, in August 1955, wolf whisteled at a woman in a shop. Her husband, Roy Bryant, and his half-brother kidnapped him, beat him, shot him and dumped him in a river. Till’s mother, Mamie Bradley, had an open viewing of his body at the funeral home which gave it huge publicity. The defendants were cleared by the judge and sold their story to a magazine for 3.5 thousand dollars. Although Till did not get justice, his death was very important for civil rights as it showed how blacks were being mistreated and showed the power of publicity for protesting.

Q

How did NAACP help win Brown vs Topeka from 1952-55?

A

They proved that black facilities in schools were worse than whites, which meant that Plessy vs Furguson wasn’t happening. When Earl Warren, an anti segregation man, became judge in December 1952, the court trial became easier to win and in May 1955 Brown 2 led to school desegregation becoming legal in the South.
