Sweatt v. Painter summary
Ruled that in states where public graduate and professional schools existed for white students but not for black students, black students must be admitted to the all-white schools and that the equal protection clause required Sweatt’s admission to the University of Texas School of Law.
Plessy v. Ferguson summary
Ruled that Louisiana state law allowed for “equal but separate accommodations for the white and colored races” keyword separate but equal.
Delgado v. Bastrop summary
Ruled that Mexican-American children could not be segregated from white schools (this was one of the first successful desegregation cases in the state)
Hernadez v. Texas summary
Ruled that Pete Hernandez’s ruling for murder should be overturned because Mexican Americans had been stopped from being on the jury that convicted him.
Brown v. Board of Education summary
Ruled that separating children in public schools on the basis of race was unconstitutional.
Mendez v. Westminister summary
Ruled to overturn racial segregation in education in California (set a precedent for the later Brown v. Board of Education case)
Wisconsin v. Yoder summary
Ruled that Wisconsin’s school attendance law was unconstitutional as applied to the Amish because it violated their First Amendment right to free exercise of religion.
