What are civil rights and what do they do?
Civil rights sre personal rights guaranteed by our government. They protect us against discrimination
What kinds of identity characteristics are used to discriminate against others?
Race, age, national origin, color, disability, gender or religion
What is “de jure” segregation?
Segregation imposed by law
What is de facto segregation ?
Segregation without law
What decision from FDR played a part in the origins of the civil rights movement?
He banned discrimination in military industries
What is the NAACP?
The national association for the advancement of colored people.
Who is thurgood Marshall?
An attorney that wanted to bring segregation to court
Why was non violent protest so effective?
People who opposed them didn’t have an excuse to do anything bad because the protesters weren’t doing anything to hurt anyone
What was the goal behind the march on Washington and why was it effective?
It pressured congress into passing the bill, and a lot of people supported the march, even people who were white
What did the civil rights act of 1964 do?
It banned all segregation LEGALLY
What did the Selma March want to accomplish?
Pressuring congress to give blacks equal voting rights
How did JFK change America’s strategy regarding the Cold War?
He believed prosperity would help contain the spread of communism, so he made the peace corps who went to third world countries and helped them politically snd economically
After the failed invasion of Cuba, what was the relationship between Cuba and the USSR?
Russia and Cuba became good friends
Explain the events of the Cuban missile crisis
Russia placed missiles in Cuba, and the Us couldn’t let this happen. The us made a naval blockade in Cuba and had secret discussions with the Russian leader to get them to get rid of the missiles in Cuba
Why as JFKS assasination so impactful?
Everyone got to see the killing on camera instead of just hearing about it
