Civil Rights
Rights that guarantee individuals freedom from discrimination. These rights are generally grounded in the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment
Separate but Equal Laws
Rooted in the 1896 SCOTUS case Plessy v. Ferguson and is the idea that racial segregation was acceptable as long as the separate facilities were of equal quality
Jim Crow Laws
Local and state laws created to enforce racism and ensure that the whites remained in power (established after segregation officially ended w/ Civil Rights Act of 1964)
Brown v Board
1954
Ruled that “Separate but Equal” was “inherently unequal” and began the process of desegregation in the south.
Ended the precedent of Plessy v. Ferguson
