Banned discrimination in employment and gave black Americans equal rights to enter public places
What was the voting rights act of 1965?
Stopped racial discrimination over the right to vote and ended literacy tests
How did black Americans contribute to the war effort?
Desegregation of the navy happened in 1946
Tuskagee airmen, Double V for Victory campaign
What was brown vs Topeka?
Linda Brown wasn’t allowed to attend a white school but with the help of the NAACP it was taken to the Topeka board of education but was escalated to the Supreme Court and then she was allowed to attend
What was Little Rock?
In 1957, 9 black American students tried to enrol at Little Rock High School. The governor called in guards to prevent them from entering but the president sent in troops to protect them. They could then attend the school.
Who was MLK?
Passive resistance,became main voice of SCLC,took part in March on Washington in 1963 and Montgomery bus boycott in 1955
Who was Malcolm X?
Advocated violence,had a huge impact on young black Americans,encourage them to be proud of their heritage.
How did Roosevelt help to improve civil rights?
Issued an executive order which stopped discrimination in industrial, and government jobs(increased to 200,000)
Who was James Meredith?
In 1962, JFK sent 320 federal troops to escort James Meredith into a university which he was told he couldn’t attend due to his race
What was the MIA?
The Montgomery improvement association led by MLK
What was the Montgomery bus boycott?
In December 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus
The MIA then boycotted the buses
Rosa Parks was then released
What were sit - ins?
Black American students would protest by sitting at a bar which wasn’t allowed
They would receive violence whilst they peacefully protested
Who were the freedom riders?
Was led by CORE and tested whether segregation was still happening or not
Who was MLK?
LED the MIA and SCLC
Won the Nobel peace prize
Used peaceful protesting
Was assassinated in 1968
What happened in Birmingham,Alabama?
MLK led a peaceful protest but got arrested
Dogs and hoses were used to intimidate protesters
2000 protesters were arrested
