Civil Liberty
Basic individual rights and freedoms that are protected from government intervention.
Alien
Residents of a state but are not citizens.
Sedition
Use of language that encourages people to rebel against lawful government.
Prior Restraint
Stopping someone from expressing an idea or providing information.
Libel
Unjustly harming another person’s character by writing it down.
Slander
Unjustly harming another person’s character by saying it verbally.
Symbolic Speech
Non-verbal action meant to deliver a message.
Due Process
Government’s duty to follow procedures set by law including allowing trial process.
Naturalization
Entering a country legally and establishing residence and prove they can support themselves in order to become a U.S. citizen.
Equal Protection Clause
Part of the 14th Amendment, stating that the government cannot deny any person equal protection under the law.
Rational Basis Test
Allows differences in treatment if law is used to establish reasonable methods of accomplishing a legitimate goal in government.
Civil Rights Movement
Minorities and women gain in practice the rights guaranteed to all citizens by the Constitution.
Selective Incorporation
The Bill of Rights being incorporated (used and applied) in all states under the United States.
One-Party System
One dominant political party, a democracy cannot stand.
Two-Party System
Two political parties dominate the government.
